DISCOVERING WHO I WAS AND HOW IT MADE ME WHO I AM
It could be fun to see what winds up here on this page.
Just the facts:
I am a USAF officer's brat. I did not travel as much as some of my other childhood military friends, but I moved enough.
I did graduate from Burkburnett High School, but I only attended that small town school for a year and a half. Still, some of my roots remain there. Certainly, living in that part of Texas made a lasting impression on me.
Did you see the movie The Last Picture Show? Well, in the late '60's, Burkburnett was a lot like the town in that movie. Small western town USA.
My dad was in the Air Force and I moved to Wichita Falls when I was a Junior in High School. I caught a bus in the early morning and rode it to school. In those days, all us military brats were bussed and it was not for segregation (what is that?-- you millennials are thinking). We didn't have cars of our own, either.
Being exposed to "Burk" (what we called Burkburnett) was definitely an education. I loved every minute of it. I still wonder if the Dairy Mart is still there and if it still makes those wonderful Chili Burgers. Have you ever had a frozen "Scotchie" (like a peanutbutter cup, but made with butterscotch flavors). What about a Frito Pie? That's where I first had those "fast foods".
Before I moved to Burkburnett, TX, my family was stationed on Clark AFB in the Philippine Islands. I attended 9th and 10th grades at Wagner HS located on the base. Life was paradise. Truly. Swimming all year long--think tropics.
Every household had at least one maid and a yardboy--not because we were rich! It was because the cost of living was so cheap in the Philippines.
Mothers never had to cook; teens never had to babysit younger sibs. The military ran buses to all the places one needed to go, so kids had a "free run".
In a way it was good; in a way it was not so good. (Read between the lines: "Not a lot of parental supervision.")
The era was the mid-sixties. I was in the PI when the Vietnam War escalated. I still remember watching fighter planes take off from the airfield heading into the sunset. Because of some kind of treaty, the planes had to land somewhere else before heading to 'Nam to drop whatever was on board.
I also remember that some of my friends volunteered to carry wounded soldiers off cargo planes coming from the war.
My Dad was assigned to the hospital, there. He saw the results of the war. It took its toll on him. We were sent home to the states early because of his stress level. I seem to remember hearing "heart attack". He was in his 30's.
Wow. What a time it was. I would not trade my experiences. It has contributed to who I am.
For better or for worse.
WalMart Leaves Burkburnett!
Not all small towns need Walmart
- Local Businesses Flourish After Wal-Mart Leaves Texas Town
- Wal-Mart Watch is a nationwide campaign to reveal the harmful impact of walmart on american families and demand reform of their business practices.
Why did I do this?
Is it the best site about ME? Who can tell?
Actually, I began life as a "Mickey", but when I was in high school, I kept getting assigned to the boys' PE classes. Enough was enough, so I changed the spelling. I did not think I was a "Miki" or a "Micki", etc. The -ie change kept the same number of letters in my name. It felt balanced and did not change my karma. Luckily, it is a nickname and my birth certificate did not have the be legally changed. Life was so simple.
- It might help someone find me IF they are looking.
- I keep it up to date.
- I have a lot to say. Or do I? Time will tell.
- It is created by Mickie G. (Not anything like Ali G show for sure)

A FEW OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS
SET IN TEXAS
The following books are connected somehow to Texas. Check them out; you might find a new author.
Echo Burning (Jack Reacher)
The very first book I read by Lee Child. It got me hooked on this series. I chose this book to read because it was set in Texas. That is where Burkburnett is! Get the connection?
The Most Wanted
The second book by Ms. Mitchard. Set in Texas! I loved this book. I also think that Mitchard is one of the most gifted authors around.
Living Dead in Dallas (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 2)
Read Dead Until Dark first. The series is loads of fun.
The LAST PICTURE SHOW : A Novel
The movie of this novel was filmed in Henrietta, TX which was a lot like Burkburnett in the '60s.
Spanish Dagger (China Bayles Mystery)
China Bayles lives in the Hill Country of Texas. All of the books in this series have an herbal connection. I have not read a book I did not like in this series. Give them a try.

My dad was in the Navy but retired before I was born. I guess you could say I'm a Boomer AND I'm a Dude Ranch Brat (having grown up on the family guest ranch in Montana).
I'm enjoying getting to know you through your lenses.

Interesting story. I did not know military families used to get a maid. My, how times have changed. I was born in 1970.
I am not a military brat, but before I was born my dad was in the Vietnam War.

Mickie,
I am a government employee brat. My daddy worked for NASA as a systems analyst and my mother worked as a contract specialist with the Army. My father past over the river in 1989 but my mother is still living. She misses her security clearance.
