Just for information. It could be fun to see what winds up here on this page.
I am a USAF officer's brat. I did not travel as much as some of my other military childhood friends, but I moved enough. I did graduate from Burkburnett High School, but I only attended that small town school for a year and a half. Still, some of my roots remain there. Certainly, living in that part of Texas made a lasting impression on me.
Did you see the movie The Last Picture Show? Well,in the late '60's, Burkburnett was a lot like the town in the movie. Small western town USA. My dad was in the Air Force and I moved to Wichita Falls when I was a Junior in HS. All of us military kids from the base were bussed to school in Burkburnett. In those days, all us military brats were bussed and it was not for segregation (what is that? you milennials are thinking).
Being exposed to "Burk" was definitely an education. I loved every minute of it. I still wonder if the Dairy Dream is still there and if it still makes those wonderful Chili Burgers. Have you ever had a frozen "Scotchie". What about a Frito Pie?
Before I moved to Burkburnett, TX, my family was stationed on Clark AFB in the Philippine Islands. I attended 9th and 10th grades at Wagner HS located on the base. Life was paradise. Truly. Swimming all year long--think tropics.
Every household had at least one maid and a yardboy. Mothers never had to cook; teens never had to babysit younger sibs. The military ran buses to all the places one needed to go so kids had a free run.
In a way it was good; in a way it was not so good. (Read between the lines: "Not a lot of parental supervision.")
The era was the mid-sixties. I was in the PI when the Vietnam War escalated. I still remember watching fighter planes take off from the airfield heading into the sunset. Because of some kind of treaty, the planes had to land somewhere else before heading to 'Nam.
I also remember that some of my friends volunteered to carry wounded soldiers off cargo planes. My Dad was assigned to the hospital.
Wow. What a time it was.

The very first book I read by Lee Child. It got me hooked on this series. I chose this book to read because it was set in Texas. That is where Burkburnett is! Get the connection?
Amazon Price: $7.99 (as of 09/05/2008)
The second book by Ms. Mitchard. Set in Texas! I loved this book. I also think that Mitchard is one of the most gifted authors around.

The movie of this novel was filmed in Henrietta, TX which was a lot like Burkburnett in the '60s.

China Bayles lives in the Hill Country of Texas. All of the books in this series have an herbal connection. I have not read a book I did not like in this series. Give them a try.
